US power use to beat record highs in 2026 and 2027 as AI use surges, EIA says

The forecast tops the prior 2025 record as Permian and Haynesville output grows on higher oil prices and stronger drilling economics, the EIA said.

  • The Energy Information Administration forecasts U.S. marketed natural gas production will average 122.5 billion cubic feet per day in 2026, surpassing the previous record of 118.5 Bcf/d set in 2025.
  • Expansion is concentrated in the Permian Basin, where production is driven by associated gas from crude oil extraction; West Texas Intermediate prices averaged $84/b through July 2026, supporting oil-directed drilling.
  • Haynesville region production is forecast to increase 9% in 2026, remaining economical despite costly drilling at depths up to 13,500 feet due to proximity to Gulf Coast export terminals.
  • The Henry Hub spot price is forecast to average $3.44 per million British thermal units in 2026, while inventories are expected to increase to 3,985 billion cubic feet by October.
  • Supporting the nation's consistent global production leadership since 2009, EIA Administrator Tristan Abbey said, "More natural gas in inventories in the fall season provides a cushion for increased heating-related consumption during the winter.
