Postal Service to Take Extra Steps to Ensure Ballot Deliveries
The agency is adding expedited handling, special pickups and Priority Mail Express after delivering 99.2 million ballots in 2024, officials said.
On Thursday, USPS announced extraordinary measures to ensure ballot delivery for the November 2026 congressional elections, including extending retail hours starting October 4 through election day.
The agency adopted these measures following a March executive order from President Donald Trump aimed at tightening regulations governing mail-in voting procedures.
Retail branches may establish "Ballot Postmark Only" lines at counters or a drive-through "Ballot Mail" option, while USPS will conduct expedited handling and extra deliveries of ballots.
Starting October 24, carriers must check every delivery point for outgoing mail, and workers can use Priority Mail Express network to expedite delivery of returned ballots.
On September 14, the Supreme Court declined to let USPS enforce a rule targeting mail-in ballots, dealing a setback to Trump's effort to restrict voting by mail.
