Zverev Takes Care of Business, Khachanov Prevails
On Monday, top seed Alexander Zverev defeated Italian Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 at Arthur Ashe Stadium to advance to the US Open quarter-finals.
Coming off two demanding five-set matches, the 29-year-old French Open champion dominated early, securing quick double-breaks in the first two sets to maintain control throughout.
Darderi rallied in the third set with blistering forehands, but Zverev wrapped up victory with his 13th ace after 2hr 30mins of play.
"I thought my level was very consistent," Zverev said, noting Darderi's intensity in the third set while joking he did not know what to do with his early finish.
Zverev, the only man to reach the quarter-finals at all four Grand Slams this year, will face Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp for a spot in the semi-finals.
Alexander Zverev reached the quarter-finals at the US Open on Monday evening and presented himself in title form for the first time. The German French Open winner gave Italian Luciano Darderi a chance at the 6:2,6:2,7:6(7:3) only in the third set and was able to rely above all on his strong bonus.
