Saudi Arabia unexpectedly cuts oil prices to Asia
The cut lowers the starting price for Asian refiners after OPEC+ agreed to hold output steady, Reuters said.
On Monday, Saudi Aramco unexpectedly cut the November Arab Light official selling price for Asia by $3 a barrel, setting it at $5 below the Oman and Dubai benchmark.
Traders and refiners had expected a price increase, but the producer prioritized market share as flows through the Strait of Hormuz increase and regional competition intensifies.
Saudi Aramco made deeper cuts of $5 a barrel for Arab Medium and Arab Heavy grades, while raising prices for Europe and the Mediterranean by $3 and keeping United States prices unchanged.
The discount represents the widest margin since June 2020, pushing benchmark oil grades to a six-year low while shipping costs remain high in the Persian Gulf.
Saudi Arabia and other OPEC members agreed on Sunday to maintain current oil production targets through November, with analysts expecting no significant policy adjustments until next year.
