Volkswagen floats making Audis in US to swerve Trump tariffs

Volkswagen could relocate some production of its high-end Audi line to dodge US tariffs on automobiles ordered by President Donald Trump, the German carmaker's CEO said in an interview released Friday.

The Volkswagen Group is negotiating with the US government on the new import duties.

German automakers are hit hard by US tariffs. VW is now trying to negotiate with the Trump administration.

Recently, Volkswagen has been in the center of attention mostly due to gloomy news. And now even additional shifts are being introduced at the parent factory in Wolfsburg. And direct negotiations are underway with the US government.

In a German press interview, Volkswagen's boss Oliver Blume said Friday, April 18, 2025, he wanted to "do everything possible to remain a reliable investor and partner in the United States." In discussion with the Trump administration, he could locate some of Audi's production there.
