- To cut off funds for weapons and proxies, the department said the U.S. Treasury will `continue to deprive the regime of the petroleum revenue it uses to fund its military and weapons programs`, citing Iran's nuclear program and militant proxies.
- On December 18, the U.S. targeted Egyptian businessman Hatem Elsaid Farid Ibrahim Sakr, linked to seven vessels, and recalled the December 10 seizure of Skipper off Venezuela.
- The Treasury says the vessels moved hundreds of millions of dollars through deceptive practices, heightening tensions between Tehran and Washington after five rounds of indirect nuclear negotiations and a 12-day air war in June.
- This month Washington also acted on a Venezuelan tanker previously sanctioned for carrying Iranian oil, while Iran says its nuclear work is for civil purposes and its mission to the United Nations did not immediately respond.
