U.S. Gun Suicides Continue Record Rise
UNITED STATES, JUN 26 – Gun suicides accounted for 58% of firearm deaths in 2023, rising sharply among Black and Hispanic youth and disproportionately affecting rural areas, Johns Hopkins researchers found.
- In 2023, firearms were linked to 46,728 fatalities in the U.S., and for the fourth year in a row, they accounted for the highest number of deaths among individuals younger than 17.
- Gun suicides have continued to increase to unprecedented levels for the third consecutive year, even as firearm-related homicides have decreased, highlighting the deadly impact and easy availability of guns.
- In 2023, approximately 27,300 deaths involving firearms were suicides, making up 58% of all gun-related fatalities, with men facing a risk of gun suicide nearly sevenfold higher than that of women.
- Gun suicide rates were notably higher in rural states such as Wyoming, where the rate was nearly tenfold greater than that of Massachusetts, which reported the lowest rate. Additionally, over the past decade, firearm suicide rates among Black and Hispanic youth have increased dramatically.
- Researchers emphasize that interventions such as safe storage laws and extreme risk protection orders reduce gun suicide risks, suggesting policy changes could mitigate this growing crisis.
