U.S. Government Moves $1 Billion in Bitcoin From Bitfinex Hack Wallet
Arkham said no exchange deposit was recorded, leaving unclear whether the 12,267 BTC will be sold or simply moved again.
On Thursday, wallets linked to the U.S. government moved 12,267 BTC, worth about $1.006 billion, from funds seized in the 2016 Bitfinex hack to new, unlabeled addresses.
Arkham, a blockchain intelligence firm, tied the coins to FTX and Alameda seizures alongside the Bitfinex case. No exchange deposit was recorded, a pattern suggesting wallet reshuffling rather than a sale.
CoinDesk reported Wednesday that more than $100 million in BTC and BNB moved similarly. Separately, roughly 3,200 BTC worth about $264 million landed at Coinbase Prime 24 hours earlier.
Deposits to Coinbase Prime do not necessarily indicate a sale, as the platform also provides custody services. The transfer pattern appears consistent with simple wallet reshuffling.
A 2025 executive order mandates that forfeited bitcoin be moved into the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and "shall not be sold and shall be maintained as reserve assets of the United States." Total government holdings reach about $25.5 billion in crypto.
