US Ramps up Fuel Exports to Cuba's Private Sector
U.S. exports about 30,000 barrels of diesel fuel to Cuban private firms since February, supporting them amid an energy crunch while excluding state enterprises, Reuters data shows.
U.S. suppliers shipped approximately 30,000 barrels of fuel to Cuba's private sector this year to date, according to shipping data and documents viewed by Reuters on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, reflecting a Trump administration strategy to support private enterprises over state-run firms.
Since January, the United States has enforced a strict oil blockade against Cuba to pressure its government, yet officials created exceptions for the island's small private sector, which U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said aims to place private Cubans in a privileged position.
Fuel arrives in ISO-tanks, each designed to hold approximately 21,600 liters safely on container ships, with around 200 such tanks discharged in Cuba. The vast majority of imports are diesel; only 1% of the tanks contained gasoline.
