US drivers are seeing lower gas prices this holiday season

December gas prices fell below $3 nationwide due to mild crude oil costs and strong supply, marking the lowest December average since 2020, AAA reported.

  • This holiday season, many U.S. drivers see lower prices as the national average for unleaded gasoline stays below the $3 mark since Dec. 2 and hits about $2.85 a gallon low on Monday.
  • Because crude stayed relatively mild, motor club AAA says this month's cheaper prices arrive as supply remains strong and West Texas Intermediate stayed below the $60 per barrel mark for most of December.
  • By state, Oklahoma reported the lowest average at about $2.30, with Arkansas and Iowa near $2.42, while Hawaii had the highest at about $4.44, followed by California and Washington.
  • Consumers hitting the road ahead of the Christmas holiday will likely continue to see mild prices, with unleaded gasoline down more than 18 cents from last year and 21 cents from a month ago.
  • According to motor club AAA, December is the cheapest month for pump prices this year and the cheapest December since 2020, but year-over-year inflation remains above the Federal Reserve's 2% target and many Americans still express frustration about high living costs.
