USTR Weighs Extending Pause on China-Linked Vessel Fees to January
The proposal would keep Section 301 port fees on China-linked vessels on hold while U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer weighs further talks with Beijing.
On October 23, the Office of the United States Trade Representative proposed extending the suspension of port fees on China-linked vessels until January 9, 2027, according to a Federal Register filing.
This extension aims to "allow for further negotiation with China regarding the acts, policies, and practices at issue in this investigation," following an economic détente agreed upon by the United States and China.
More than 200 trade associations, including the National Retail Federation , urged USTR Ambassador Jamieson Greer to extend the suspension, warning that resumed fees would increase costs for U.S. importers.
Public feedback is due October 30, as operators like Atlantic Container Line prepare to comment; reclassification of ACL's ships could cost the company an estimated $34 million annually.
If finalized, the reprieve lasts through January 9, 2027, though officials describe the relief as temporary. Future actions depend on ongoing bilateral talks between Washington and Beijing.
