US Approves Export of Nvidia AI Chips to UAE and Saudi Arabia
The U.S. authorized up to 35,000 Nvidia AI chips worth $1 billion to UAE and Saudi firms under strict security controls to advance AI and bilateral tech cooperation.
- On Wednesday, the U.S. Commerce Department authorised exports of Nvidia AI chips to the United Arab Emirates' G42 and Saudi Arabia's HUMAIN, approving up to 35,000 chips worth about $1 billion under Bureau of Industry and Security oversight.
- After earlier export curbs, former President Joe Biden imposed restrictions on advanced AI chips, and the approval follows Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's $1 trillion pledge, up from $600 billion.
- At the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum, Saudi Arabia's HUMAIN signed partnerships with Adobe, Qualcomm, AMD, Cisco and xAI and plans to buy 600,000 Nvidia AI chips and build a 500 megawatt data centre.
- The approval forms part of a U.S.-Saudi strategic AI partnership that includes semiconductor supply and boosts plans for an AI campus in Abu Dhabi and computing infrastructure projects.
- The U.S. Commerce Department said the move promotes American AI leadership, citing recent approvals like Microsoft's export license to the UAE two weeks ago and the UAE's $1.4 trillion pledge.
