Urgent warning to parents over baby sleeping bags after 50 UK recalls
Officials said nearly 50 recalls and safety notices have been issued since 2023 for bags that can trap babies or cover their faces.
On Thursday, October 1, the Office for Product Safety and Standards issued a safety alert for baby sleeping bags, urging parents to stop using items that lack armholes or feature hoods for unsupervised sleep.
These design flaws create a "serious risk of suffocation" and overheating, as hoods can shift over faces while bags without armholes allow infants to slip inside, covering their mouth and nose.
Separately, the Advertising Standards Authority checked 350 online ads, finding 59% were "high risk" and identifying 60 ads for immediate follow-up action due to potential physical harm.
Businesses must immediately withdraw non-compliant products under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005, while consumers who purchased these items may seek redress from the seller.
Since 2023, nearly 50 recalls have been issued across the UK for dangerous sleeping bags, with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents warning of "hidden dangers" in various in-cot sleep aids.
