Potentially Radioactive Shrimp Sold at Mariano's, Other Stores in Illinois and Indiana
Aquastar is recalling over 44,000 packages of frozen shrimp sold across 27 U.S. states due to cesium-137 contamination detected in samples and shipping containers.
- AquaStar USA Corp. and H&N Group Inc. began recalling tens of thousands of frozen and refrigerated shrimp packages in August 2025 across multiple U.S. states due to possible cesium-137 contamination.
- The recalls followed FDA safety alerts after U.S. Customs detected radioactive cesium-137 in shipping containers imported from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati sent to ports including Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, and Savannah.
- Affected products included Kroger Mercado cooked shrimp sold between July 24 and August 11 in at least 17 states and Walmart refrigerated cocktail shrimp distributed in 27 states from July 31 to August 16.
- Tests showed about 68 becquerels per kilogram of cesium-137 in a shrimp sample, well below the FDA action level of 1,200 becquerels per kilogram, and experts agreed the health risk is low but the contamination source remains unclear.
- Consumers are advised to discard or return the recalled shrimp for a full refund as federal officials investigate, while the FDA has issued an import alert to prevent further contaminated shipments.
