French Open 2026: Ukrainian Starodubtseva Upsets No. 2 Rybakina
Starodubtseva beat second seed Elena Rybakina in a deciding super tiebreak as Rublev and Swiatek moved into the third round.
On Wednesday, Ukraine's Yuliia Starodubtseva upset second-seeded Elena Rybakina 3-6 6-1 7-6 at the French Open, claiming the biggest upset of the tournament and her career. "It's hard to describe, I'm super happy," Starodubtseva said.
Rybakina, the Australian Open champion, won the opening set but Starodubtseva turned the match around in gruelingly hot conditions, recovering from 3-0 down in the deciding set before Rybakina fell short in the tiebreak.
Starodubtseva equaled the best result of her career by reaching the third round for a second consecutive year, becoming the third Ukrainian in the women's third round alongside seventh seed Elina Svitolina and 15th seed Marta Kostyuk.
Third seed Iga Swiatek defeated Sara Bejlek 6-2 6-3 to advance to the third round, where she will face either Magda Linette or 2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko after Linette's 6-2 2-6 6-2 victory.
Russian 11th seed Andrey Rublev outlasted Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-1 1-6 6-3 7-6 in a three-hour battle as temperatures around 28 degrees Celsius rose toward 32 degrees, with Svitolina and 13th seed Karen Khachanov also advancing in lengthy matches.
