Medic with hantavirus symptoms in UK hospital as nine virus contacts to arrive
The UK Health Security Agency said the medic will get specialist testing while nine exposed Britons finish self-isolation after a cruise ship outbreak.
On Sunday evening, nine Britons potentially exposed to hantavirus are due to arrive in the UK, while a medic is receiving care in a London hospital after developing suspected symptoms on a British overseas territory.
Following a request for assistance, the UK Health Security Agency deployed three members of the Public Health Rapid Support Team to the South Atlantic on Friday to provide support for eight weeks.
Officials transferred the medic to a High Consequence Infectious Diseases unit for a "specialist assessment" on Saturday, a move described as a "highly precautionary measure" by the UKHSA because no specialized unit exists on Ascension Island.
The nine individuals arriving Sunday will complete self-isolation in the UK, with the UKHSA confirming "support available from the NHS's High Consequence Infectious Diseases network" if any passengers fall ill.
Authorities previously utilized Arrowe Park Hospital to monitor passengers connected to the MV Hondius cruise ship, where a separate outbreak resulted in at least 11 confirmed cases and three fatalities.
