GP Practice Websites Crash Leaving Patients Unable to Book Appointments
The outage has forced patients back to phone lines and front desks as health bodies help practices replace websites and online consultation tools.
Hundreds of GP websites across England and Wales crashed after Silicon Practice, their software provider, entered administration. NHS England confirmed that sites relying on the company are affected, though the exact number remains unannounced.
Silicon's parent company, Schappit Ltd, filed for administration earlier this month following financial difficulties. The software provider had partnered with the NHS since 2005 and claimed to serve more than 1,000 GP websites.
Patients visiting sites for surgeries like Southgate Surgery and Millwood Medical Practice encounter '502 Bad Gateway' errors. The outage disrupted the FootFall consultation platform, forcing practices to manage increased administrative pressure via telephone.
NHS England has contacted affected practices with guidance on maintaining business continuity. Patients are advised to contact surgeries by phone or in person, or use the NHS App for routine issues while alternative arrangements are finalized.
Regional Integrated Care Boards are currently helping surgeries find replacement providers. Some GPs argue the disruption demonstrates risks of relying on private companies for essential digital infrastructure like triage platforms.
