ZIM-Chartered Ship Sinks in Black Sea After Drone Attack (ZIM:NYSE)
All 18 crew were evacuated as the vessel went down with 421 containers, including hazardous materials, officials said.
On Wednesday, three unmanned surface vehicles struck and sank the Contship Jet, a vessel chartered by ZIM Integrated Shipping Services off Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, forcing the evacuation of all 18 crew members as 421 containers went down.
Spillover from the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war has created expanding threats to commercial shipping in the Black Sea, with this sinking marking the ninth civilian vessel struck this month, leaving over 30 sailors dead.
The ship was traveling from Haifa to Constanta carrying hazardous materials including lithium-ion batteries and corrosive acids when it sustained severe damage. Bulgarian Navy rescue efforts transported all 18 crew members—14 Filipinos and four Ukrainians—to the port of Varna.
Oren Caspi, chairman of ZIM's workers' union, emphasized maintaining Israeli control amid geopolitical instability, stating, "In a reality of boycotts and security threats, we must keep ZIM Israeli."
Defense ministers from Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey convened to discuss maritime security in the region, though Bulgarian Chief of Defense Adm. Emil Eftimov acknowledged authorities were unable to destroy the unmanned vessels responsible for the attack.
