Cannan Campaign Questions Transparency, Accuracy of Kelowna Vote Count
After meeting with the city’s chief election officer, Ron Cannan’s campaign confirmed the unofficial totals and ended plans for a recount.
On Oct. 19, Kelowna mayoral candidate Ron Cannan confirmed he will not request a recount in the General Local Elections, a decision following a meeting with Michael Jud to review results.
Cannan initially cited a "strong possibility" of a recount, expressing concerns that registered scrutineers were barred from accessing vote information and questioning reporting delays for all 22 of the city's polling stations.
In the unofficial results from Oct. 17, Tom Dyas won the mayoral race with 19,451 votes, defeating Cannan by 969 votes, while Andrew Uitvlugt received 556 votes, or 1.4 per cent of the total.
Campaign manager Shari Matvieshen expressed concern regarding the two-day wait for answers after emailing Jud at around 1 a.m. on Oct. 18, yet the campaign ultimately decided against proceeding with a recount.
Official results will be released by the City of Kelowna on Oct. 21, finalizing the electoral process following the preliminary count released on Oct. 17.
