University of Arizona Among 7 Rejecting Trump's Funding Deal
Five prestigious universities have declined the White House offer tying federal funding to ideological policy changes including admissions criteria and tuition freezes.
- This past week, the University of Arizona said it is reviewing the White House compact, and Arizona State University has exchanged correspondence but neither has said if they will sign.
- On October 1, the White House sent the 10-page Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education to nine universities asking for a tuition freeze, standardized tests, and a 15% international enrollment cap.
- To enforce compliance, the compact would require annual 'anonymous poll' participation of faculty, students and staff and DOJ review, with violations triggering loss of benefits and repayment.
- Multiple universities have already rejected the compact, with six schools including MIT, Penn, Brown, USC, Dartmouth College, and UVA declining it, while about 80 U of A professors, the University of Arizona Faculty Senate, Tucson City Council, and Pima County Board of Supervisors opposed the offer.
- The University of Arizona is reviewing a White House funding deal amid high stakes, with critics warning tying research benefits to unrelated demands risks politicization, as past cancellations raise concerns.
