Universal Studios Gets Green Light to Be Built in Bedfordshire
Communities Secretary Steve Reed confirmed a Special Development Order granting planning permission for Britain’s first Universal Studios at Kempston Hardwick, laid before Parliament.
Kempston Hardwick, a former brickworks site, was chosen for strong transport links including Wixams rail connections and London Luton Airport, covering around 268 hectares for the Entertainment Resort Complex.
The proposal is expected to create around 20,000 construction jobs and attract 8.5 to 12 million visitors annually, with rides up to 115m planned.
The SDO will take effect on January 12, but a parliamentary review period must still be completed and further detail on conditions and timescales is expected as the SDO comes into force.
Once completed, the resort will be Universal’s first UK park and sixth worldwide, with planned upgrades to Wixams rail station, East West Rail, A421, and 80% local hiring from Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Luton & Milton Keynes.
