United Plane Aborts Takeoff at Chicago O'Hare International Airport After Blowing Tire
All 161 passengers and six crew members deplaned on the runway, and the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the disabled aircraft.
On Thursday, August 13, 2026, United Flight 455 safely aborted its takeoff at Chicago O'Hare International Airport after the Boeing 737-900 sustained tire damage while headed to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport with 161 passengers and six crew members.
Rescue personnel reported two blown tires on the right main landing gear around 1:45 p.m. A nearby pilot described seeing "lots of chunks of tire going down the runway" via air traffic control audio.
Passengers deplaned the aircraft directly onto the runway via portable airstairs, then United Airlines buses transported all travelers back to the terminal. Officials confirmed no injuries were reported following the incident.
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident as United Airlines arranged a replacement aircraft to Phoenix. The disabled plane caused average delays of 25 minutes for other O'Hare flights.
Federal officials continue to review the incident, though the specific cause of the tire failure on the Boeing 737-900 remains unknown. The airport resumed normal operations after the jet cleared the runway.
