United ditches flight segments, raises bar for 1K in Premier status shakeup
The airline is shifting to a spending-based status system and raising 1K requirements by 4,000 PQPs, according to a memo to loyalty members.
On Tuesday, United Airlines announced it will eliminate "Premier Qualifying Flights" as a status metric for 2027, requiring members to earn elite status solely through "Premier Qualifying Points."
Jarad Fisher, United's president of MileagePlus, called the flight segments metric an "old relic," stating the airline "thought it made more sense for them to have one consistent metric" across member activity.
For top-tier 1K status, members will need 32,000 points in 2027, up from 28,000; members must still take four United flights annually, though eligible credit card holders receive a 5% point deposit.
Travelers who previously relied on flight segments must now increase spending on fares and credit cards to maintain elite standing, as the path to status "involves spending as much money as possible."
This shift aligns United with rivals American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, which have focused exclusively on spending for years, following the airline's overhaul of mileage redemption practices earlier this year.
