Luna, a small dog missing for over a month in Yellowstone, is reunited with her owners
Volunteers used the family’s scent in a live trap after more than a month of sightings, and Luna was found underweight but in good spirits.
On Wednesday, Luna, a 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier, was reunited with her California owners after spending over a month lost in Yellowstone National Park.
A housekeeping staffer accidentally opened a cabin door, causing Luna to bolt into the sprawling 3,500-square-mile park home to grizzly bears, wolves and other predators.
Katie Boucher, president of the Norris Ark Training and Recovery Center in Norris, Montana, set a trap baited with family-scented items as Luna had been spotted retracing her family's steps through lodges and employee housing.
A veterinary examination on Wednesday afternoon found Luna underweight but alert and in good spirits, according to Boucher.
Rescue efforts intensified as winter approached and the seasonal RV park where Luna stayed prepared to close next Monday, with local resident Marie Jaskula urging visitors not to chase the dog.
