Cabinet Approves ₹2,157 Crore 4-Lane Upgrade of Marakkanam–Puducherry Highway
VILLUPURAM, TAMIL NADU, AUG 8 – The 46-km upgrade will reduce congestion on NH-332A and create 1.8 million person-days of employment, enhancing connectivity and economic growth in Tamil Nadu, officials said.
- The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Friday approved a 46 km four-lane highway from Marakkanam to Puducherry in Tamil Nadu.
- Connectivity between Chennai, Puducherry, Viluppuram, and Nagapattinam depended on the existing 2-lane NH-332A, which suffered significant congestion, a Cabinet communique said.
- Official estimates project the scheme will develop on Hybrid Annuity Mode, with Rs 1,118 crore for civil works and Rs 442 crore for land acquisition.
- Officials said the upgrade will decongest the corridor, improve safety, double vehicle speed, and reduce travel time by 40% from 60 minutes to 35.
- Looking ahead, the Marakkanam-Puducherry section will strengthen regional growth by boosting tourism and enabling trade and industrial development.
