Unifor says it thinks Stellantis has sold Brampton assembly plant
The deal would include a sale-and-leaseback arrangement and repayment of federal retooling funds, according to a source familiar with the matter.
Unifor believes Stellantis has finalized the sale of its idled Brampton Assembly Plant to defence contractor Roshel, interpreting the automaker's refusal to confirm or deny the transaction as evidence the deal is complete.
Stellantis, which makes Chrysler and Dodge, signed a memorandum of understanding with Roshel this summer but declined to confirm or deny a final agreement during a Friday meeting with union representatives.
More than 2,000 workers were laid off when the plant halted operations in 2023, and negotiations stalled after Stellantis shifted plans to build the Jeep Compass to its Illinois facility instead.
"Unifor is interpreting this refusal as confirmation," Lana Payne, the union's national president, said; Stellantis would also repay federal funds received for retooling after the 2023 closure as part of the arrangement.
A source familiar with the matter expects an announcement early next week, with the plan reportedly involving Stellantis selling the facility to Roshel and leasing it back for future production purposes.
