The Centre said over 1.18 lakh eligible beneficiaries have opted for the Unified Pension Scheme since its rollout in April 2025. Introduced to provide an assured post-retirement income, the UPS continues as an optional pension framework under the NPS, with no review conducted so far.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has clarified regarding the Unified Pension Scheme that at present we have no plans to make any changes regarding UPS nor is any such proposal under consideration.

The Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) has received limited response from central government employees, with only 1.18 lakh workers opting for it by July 19, accounting for 4.3% of NPS subscribers. Introduced in April 2025 after demands for assured pensions, UPS offers a 50% pension guarantee, gratuity benefits and minimum monthly payout of ₹10,000. The government extended the opt-in deadline to November 30, 2025.
