UNBC Launches New PhD Program in Engineering
The program will add research in sustainable infrastructure, water management and environmental engineering as UNBC seeks to keep students closer to northern communities.
- The University of Northern British Columbia is launching a PhD in Engineering program this fall, marking the institution's first new doctoral degree in over 15 years.
- UNBC Provost Michel Beaulieu noted students previously left the region for advanced studies and often "don't come back," making this program a way for residents to pursue degrees while staying in northern communities.
- Students will combine advanced coursework with original research spanning sustainable infrastructure, water resource management, wood engineering, and other disciplines aligned with UNBC's strategic research priorities.
- Jessie Sunner, Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills, said the program will help "attract and retain graduate students, researchers, and innovators in northern B.C." while addressing challenges including clean water and resilient transportation infrastructure.
- Engineering Professor Mauricio Dziedzic noted students can now complete their entire engineering education continuum at the university, from undergraduate through doctoral degrees, strengthening UNBC's research profile and attracting scholars internationally.
