UN extends partial Sudan arms embargo for a month while talks continue on US demand for a total ban

- China's Deputy Ambassador Sun Lei warned that expanding the embargo could threaten regional stability, while Sudan's Ambassador Al-Harith Mohamed argued that a total ban violates Sudan's right to self-defense.

The U.N. Security Council has voted unanimously to briefly extend the current arms embargo on Sudan’s western Darfur region while negotiations continue on a contentious U.S. proposal to expand the embargo throughout the country.
Today, Friday, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution extending for two months the mandate of the Panel of Experts on the Sudan, which monitors the implementation of sanctions imposed on the Sudan related to the conflict in Darfur.
The Security Council extended the sanctions regime imposed on the Sudan in the midst of a dispute over the extension of the United Nations arms embargo to the entire territory of the country.
