UN chief urges US, Iran to pursue peace talks, warns against escalation
Guterres warned that a military clash could spread across the region and said humanitarian aid restrictions in Gaza must be lifted.
On Monday, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged maximum restraint during a Cairo press conference, warning that current "sabre-rattling" could spiral regional conflict between the United States and Iran out of control.
Escalating tensions prompted high-stakes talks in Tehran, where representatives from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan are meeting to address the threat of overwhelming mutual military attacks between Iran and Gulf nations.
Guterres also addressed broader regional instability, condemning "unrelenting" evictions in the West Bank and calling for a two-State solution, alongside demands to end fighting in Sudan and unify Libyan institutions.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty confirmed Cairo is "talking daily with the Iranians, we are talking with the Americans" to prevent a full-scale military clash through engagement with regional partners.
Warning of "unimaginable" consequences, Guterres stressed that navigational rights and freedoms must be fully restored in and around the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to protect global trade.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterrish called on the US and Iran to exercise restraint and to prevent the conflict from escalating." I want to make it clear that we need maximum restraint and diplomatic solutions.
