Ethiopia: UN Chief 'Gravely Concerned' By Renewed Fighting in Northern Ethiopia, Warns Against Escalation
The UN said renewed clashes have displaced civilians and suspended aid operations as both sides blame each other for violating the 2022 Pretoria Agreement.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called on Friday for an immediate end to renewed fighting in northern Ethiopia, expressing deep concern over reports that Eritrean forces are present in the country.
Fighting between Ethiopian government troops and the TPLF broke out about two weeks ago, with each side blaming the other for violating the 2022 Pretoria Agreement that ended the civil war.
Ethiopia accused Eritrea of an "all-out invasion" of Tigray, reporting that Eritrean troops advanced up to 60 kilometres into the region; Eritrea rejected the claim as an "unprovoked war of aggression."
Humanitarian affairs chief Tom Fletcher called earlier this week for safe aid access as hostilities displace people across Tigray, Afar, and Amhara, disrupting relief operations.
Guterres warned the fighting risks destabilizing the wider region and urged states to "use it to support de-escalation" and refrain from violating the territorial integrity of any State.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for an immediate cease-fire between Tigrai rebels and the Ethiopian army, warning of the risk of internationalization of the conflict, according to the UN.
