Conti Ransomware Gang Member Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison

He admitted helping develop Conti malware and holding stolen data from 12 victims, including eight in the United States, prosecutors said.

  • On Thursday, the Justice Department announced a four-year prison sentence for Ukrainian national Oleksii Oleksiyovych Lytvynenko for his role in the Conti ransomware conspiracy, which infected the computers of more than 1,000 victims worldwide.
  • Conti was a prolific ransomware group active from 2020 to 2022, impacting 47 states and 31 foreign countries, which prompted the State Department to offer a $10 million reward for information related to its leaders.
  • Lytvynenko admitted to coding a "loader" malware used in attacks; when arrested in County Cork, Ireland, in July 2023, authorities found him "asleep but within arms' reach of an open laptop running Cobalt Strike."
  • Prosecutors said Lytvynenko extorted about $634,000 in Bitcoin from two Tennessee victims, including a local government entity, while co-conspirators leaked data from another victim after it refused to pay a $3 million ransom demand.
  • Conti disbanded in 2022, but members rebranded into groups including Black Basta, Quantum, Royal, and BlackSuit; officials emphasized that cybercriminals operating from overseas still face justice and meaningful consequences in United States courts.
