Ukraine's $1,000 Drones Reshape Air Defense Economics
Ukraine has scaled up to nearly 1,000 daily low-cost interceptor drones to protect cities and infrastructure from Russia’s Shahed and Gerbera drone attacks, defense officials said.
- On Thursday, Ukraine's defense ministry said it has supplied roughly 950 interceptor drones daily since the beginning of December to counter enemy Shahed-type UAVs.
- Russia has recently been attacking with roughly 5,500 Shahed-type drones a month, forcing Kyiv to develop cut-price drone killers costing as little as $1,000 this year.
- Engineers built interceptors that are FPV drones with four motor-powered propellers, shaped like bullets, and designed to destroy enemy drones costing $10,000 to $300,000 while matching speeds of Shahed-136 and Geran-3/Shahed-238 .
- Denys Shmyhal, Ukraine's defense minister, said the systems strengthen protection while preserving resources for intercepting cruise and ballistic missiles, and the ministry is working with more than 10 interceptor manufacturers with orders for next year.
- Ukrainian-Style designs are set next year to expand coproduction with U.S. and European firms, embedding Ukraine in NATO-member supply chains and supporting a layered drone wall.
