Ukraine, Russia Conduct 200-For-200 POW Exchange
The swap is the first phase of a 500-for-500 prisoner exchange agreed in Geneva, mediated by the US and UAE, with released POWs receiving medical and psychological care.
- On March 5, Ukraine secured the release of 200 servicemen from Russian captivity in the first stage of a prisoner exchange, with returnees seen wrapped in national flags shortly after arriving.
- Following trilateral talks in Geneva last month, the U.S. and UAE mediated the first-stage swap of 200 prisoners, Russia said.
- Among those freed were members of Ukraine's multiple defence and security branches, including defenders of Mariupol captured in 2022; returnees will undergo medical, physical and psychological rehabilitation and receive state benefits, while Russian servicemen face initial medical checks in Belarus.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote that 200 families received news of returns, saying `We do not forget anyone.`, while officials thanked the United States of America, President Donald Trump, and coordinating institutions.
- More prisoners will be released on Friday, as Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky said the sides aim to exchange 500 each this week, continuing rare cooperation after the Feb. 5 swap.
