Ukraine Live: Romania Probes Possible Drone Attack on Tanker
Romanian rescuers rushed to help the Comoros Islands-flagged Yara J late Wednesday off Sulina near the Ukraine border as authorities investigate a possible drone attack on the vessel.
Suspected Russian drones have hit several ships off Romania and Bulgaria since last week, marking the latest spillover from the Ukraine war in the Black Sea.
Defence Minister Radu Miruta stated the ship's crew managed to douse a fire themselves during the incident occurring in Romanian territorial waters.
Officials told Digi24 that "whether it was struck by a drone or not, an investigation is currently underway," calling the incident a matter of significant gravity in Romanian waters.
Russian air strikes killed two people in the Ukrainian Dnipropetrovsk region early on Thursday, while British finance minister John Healey called for tighter sanctions on Russia-linked shipping to disrupt shadow fleets.
Romania has reported that eight people are missing after the fire that was declared on Thursday morning on a San Marino-flagged ship, the latest incident in the Black Sea, where there have been a series of drone attacks. "There were 12 people on board the ship, four of them are safe, while eight are still missing," declared the Romanian Naval Authority in a press release.
