Russian Nuclear Head: Situation at Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Reaching 'Point of No Return'
Rosatom says the plant holds 2,600 tonnes of nuclear fuel and warns any further damage could trigger major regional risks.
On Monday, Director General of Russia's Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom Alexei Likhachev warned the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is nearing a "point of no return" due to increased Ukrainian attacks on the facility.
Europe's largest nuclear facility, now under Russia-installed management, reported attacks for the third consecutive day, with Likhachev noting the site houses about 2,600 metric tons of nuclear fuel.
Following a May 3 drone strike on the External Radiation Control Laboratory, the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed damage, with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi warning such assaults create a "nuclear safety risk."
Russia reported a worker died in an April drone strike, while both sides regularly accuse each other of compromising safety as Vladimir Putin's military targets the broader region.
Likhachev warned the situation is "playing with fire" and dangerous for Eastern European countries, urging all of Europe to expend efforts to de-escalate around the nuclear facility.
