Four-day extreme heat warning begins as temperatures could hit 38C
The alert warns of higher deaths, service strain and power demand as temperatures climb to 34C in Leeds, officials said.
The UK Health Security Agency issued an amber heat-health alert for Yorkshire and The Humber on Monday, June 22, lasting until Friday, June 26, with temperatures in Leeds forecast to reach 34°C.
Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Tom Crabtree warned the heatwave is "developing into an impactful severe weather event," with consecutive Tropical Nights where temperatures remain above 20°C, preventing physical recovery from daytime heat.
Significant impacts are likely across health and social care services, including a rise in deaths among those aged 65 and over, as internal temperatures in care settings may exceed clinical risk thresholds.
Increased demand for power may exceed capacity while travel delays loom; The Royal Life Saving Society warns water-related incidents including cold water shock may increase as crowds seek relief in coastal areas.
Forecasters have "growing confidence" the UK will break the 1976 June temperature record of 35.6°C, as Sheffield temperatures could climb as high as 36°C by Thursday while most of England faces extreme heat.
