UK weather: Temperatures to fall as record-breaking heatwave comes to an end
The Met Office said 23 stations broke the UK May temperature record as Atlantic systems bring showers and cooler, breezier weather.
On Saturday, the Met Office confirmed the UK's record-breaking May heatwave is ending as fresher Atlantic air moves in, replacing the intense spell that saw temperatures reach 35.1C at Kew Gardens on Tuesday, May 26.
Twenty-Three weather stations shattered the previous UK May maximum temperature record of 32.8C, while extreme conditions caused water supply shortages in Kent and multiple water-related fatalities across the country.
Weather maps indicate temperatures could nosedive to 5C in Scotland by Sunday, June 7, while Atlantic weather systems will bring showers and longer spells of rain throughout the coming week.
Chicago transplant Russell Valentin told Newsweek the UK heat feels "so much worse" than the United States Midwest despite lower temperatures, noting that British housing design traps warmth, making conditions "oppressive."
Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst noted signs of higher pressure returning during the middle to second half of June, though an "unsettled" start to the month is expected.
