UK Unveils £170M Plan to End HIV Transmission by 2030
The plan targets 5,000 people out of care with mental health and poverty barriers and includes opt-out testing in high-prevalence areas to help reach the 2030 goal.
- On Monday, Wes Streeting announced a 170 million scheme including opt-out HIV testing in A&Es in London and Manchester to end transmissions by 2030.
- The Department for Health and Social Care said it will target around 5,000 people living with HIV who are out of care, citing stigma as a major barrier, with Mr Streeting saying, `What they still have to contend with, I'm sad to say, is a huge amount of stigma`.
- A 5 million trial announced on Sunday will let at-risk patients order home HIV testing kits through the NHS App and the Foundation that piloted the opt-out model in 2018 welcomed extra funding to expand testing.
- The plan aims to re-engage people who have left HIV care and support the 100,000 people living with HIV in England, charities including The Elton John AIDS Foundation welcomed the move.
- UKHSA data shows 95% diagnosed, around 4,700 remain undiagnosed, and Anne Aslett warned `But without bold investment in prevention, including making PrEP widely accessible to everyone who needs it, ending new infections will remain out of reach`.
