UK supermarket plans to open dozens of new type of shop to add to existing 20 stores
Waitrose plans dozens more 7,000-square-foot neighbourhood shops with about 6,500 products and 50 parking spaces as it expands against M&S.
Waitrose is rolling out new "neighbourhood" style supermarkets across Britain as part of a £1 billion investment plan, with around 20 locations already operating in Essex and Surrey.
Each new store spans around 7,000 square feet, positioning the format between regular supermarkets and smaller Little Waitrose convenience shops to appeal to more shoppers.
The neighbourhood outlets stock around 6,500 products and provide about 50 parking spaces, supporting Waitrose's competition against M&S, which operates over 1,000 stores versus Waitrose's 320 in Britain.
Earlier this month, Waitrose launched a £20 million price-cutting campaign slashing prices on more than 160 own-brand products; Nathan Ansell, customer director, said customers can enjoy quality at "even better value."
Waitrose Retail Director Tina Mitchell said the company's growth adapts to how customers shop today, emphasizing ambition to be "wherever our customers want us" while providing uncompromising standards and expert Partner service.
