UK recognises India’s carbon credit trading scheme, relief for Indian exporters
The move lets eligible Indian goods claim relief and avoid double taxation, with merchandise trade between the two countries at $25.1 billion in 2025-26.
On Monday, the U.K. Treasury recognized India's Carbon Credit Trading Scheme as a qualifying carbon pricing mechanism, allowing Indian exporters to claim relief under the upcoming Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism .
This recognition aligns with the U.K. CBAM's core principle of preventing double taxation, ensuring goods already subject to an eligible carbon price in India receive credit toward their tax liability.
Britain currently recognizes 16 international carbon pricing schemes, including the EU Emissions Trading System, as the U.K. prepares for CBAM to take effect January 1, 2027.
An official stated, "This will reduce the effective CBAM liability on Indian goods, directly benefiting Indian exporters to the U.K.," following sustained technical-level engagement between both nations.
Ongoing collaboration will continue through the UK-India Energy Memorandum of Understanding, strengthening the trade partnership that generated $25.1 billion in bilateral merchandise trade during 2025-26.
