Burnham Says Russian Meddling in Europe Shows Need for Closer UK-EU Ties as He Seeks a Brexit Reset
Ministers say the package could boost the economy as Burnham faces criticism over remarks that Russia interfered in the Brexit vote.
On Monday, Prime Minister Andy Burnham used a Commons statement to advocate for a deeper UK-EU partnership, aiming to boost growth amid a fierce political row over his podcast comments claiming Russian interference in the 2016 Brexit referendum.
During an interview on the 'Rest Is Politics' podcast, Burnham claimed he received a 'clear answer' that Russia interfered in the 2016 vote. He later told MPs 'it is inconceivable that this was the first time,' citing established 2019 election interference.
Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch accused Burnham of implying the referendum result was illegitimate. Former prime minister Boris Johnson entered the dispute, stating he received security service assurances of 'no evidence of any successful interference' in the vote.
Downing Street later clarified that the government considers the 2016 referendum result legitimate and has not claimed Russian activity changed the outcome. Spokesman Tom Wells emphasized this stance amid ongoing debate.
Britain and the EU will hold a Brussels summit on Nov. 20 to discuss closer ties. The government aims to secure deals on food, drink, energy, and a youth mobility scheme to ease post-Brexit trade frictions.
