UK net migration drops by about two-thirds after tougher policies
Long-term net migration to the UK dropped to 204,000 in the year to June 2025, a 69% fall attributed to stricter visa rules and increased emigration, according to the Office for National Statistics.
- On Thursday, the Office for National Statistics reported long-term net migration to the United Kingdom fell 69% to 204,000 in the year to June 2025, the lowest in four years.
- Following recent reforms, Labour government has scrapped the care worker route in July and raised the skilled worker visa salary threshold to 41,700, to curb migration.
- Flow data reveal about 898,000 immigrants arrived long-term while 693,000 emigrated, including 59,000 aged 16–24 and 52,000 aged 25–30, based on data from the Office for National Statistics.
- Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said, `We are going further because the pace and scale of migration has placed immense pressure on local communities`, and ministers said reforms continue as the PM aims to close asylum hotels by 2029.
- Polling and watchdog data suggest 56% of the public think net migration rose last year, the OBR warns asylum hotels may cost £1.1 billion more if not closed by mid-2028, and small-boat arrivals near 40,000 this year.
