New Laws Coming Into Force Today Will Make It Illegal for Teenagers to Buy Cigarettes
The Tobacco and Vapes Act adds new enforcement powers and up to £10 million a year to curb youth sales and marketing.
- On Thursday, new regulations under the Tobacco and Vapes Act took effect, banning adults from purchasing vaping or nicotine products for anyone under 18.
- Dame Diana Johnson, Minister of State for Public Health and Patient Safety, noted the rollout marks six months since the Act became law, while Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer, warned that addicting children to nicotine poses "completely unacceptable" health risks.
- England's Trading Standards will enforce the rules with up to £30 million annually, while a £10 million package funds 120 specialist apprentices; giveaways, deep discounts, and vending machines are now banned in shops and online.
- Nerys Evans, Deputy Minister for Public and Preventative Health in Wales, stated the restrictions give children "a better chance to grow up healthier," as Maree Todd, Scotland's Minister for Public Health, emphasized protecting future generations from addiction.
- Future measures include a ban on selling tobacco to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009, starting January 1, 2027, and a comprehensive advertising and sponsorship ban taking effect June 1, 2027.
