UK grocery inflation edges higher over last month, says Worldpanel

Worldpanel said grocery sales rose 2.0% as households bought less volume after inflation, with fresh fish and skincare leading the increases.

  • On Tuesday, market researcher Worldpanel by Numerator reported British grocery price inflation increased to 2.3% over the four weeks to September 6, up from 2.1% in the previous month.
  • Fierce supermarket competition and consumer resistance have kept inflation below earlier forecasts, though the Food and Drink Federation warned last week that food price inflation could climb to nearly 4% by year-end.
  • Online supermarket Ocado saw 13.3% sales growth for the 30th consecutive month, while discounter Lidl increased market share to 8.7%; Asda returned to growth and Tesco sales rose 1.7% year-on-year.
  • As the academic year began, average customer spending on school uniforms fell 12.4% to £54.53, while 44% of households prioritized low costs and spending on promotional deals surged £243 million, or 7% year-on-year.
  • While Britain's new Prime Minister Andy Burnham has prioritized cost-of-living efforts, household financial strain may intensify starting in October when most UK families are expected to face higher energy bills.
