UK firms embrace AI boom, but bosses lack training to deliver it, report finds
Seventy percent of managers use generative AI for advice, but only 12% feel very confident leading AI-enabled teams, CMI said.
On Wednesday, June 10, 2026, the Chartered Management Institute reported that UK AI ambitions risk stalling due to a shortage of managers with skills and confidence to turn investment into productivity.
More than two thirds of organisations remain stuck in the experimentation phase, even though over half of managers believe their organisation will be 'AI future-ready' within the next year.
A credibility gap exists, with 64% of senior leaders encouraging AI experimentation, yet only 13% of managers believe those leaders actively test the tools themselves. Seven in ten managers prefer seeking advice from generative AI over their supervisors.
Confidence in leading AI-enabled teams remains low, with just 12% of managers feeling 'very confident,' while only 5% report transformational productivity gains and 26% report no gains at all.
CMI Chief Executive Ann Francke OBE warned that "Britain cannot become an AI leader if leadership capability itself is left behind," emphasizing technology alone will not deliver transformation.
