Lex Greensill Banned: A Nine-Year Company Director Disqualification
The Insolvency Service said Greensill breached his duty of care, and the nine-year ban exceeds the average for director disqualifications.
On Thursday, Australian financier Lex Greensill was banned from acting as a company director for nine years after the Insolvency Service concluded its investigation into Greensill Capital's collapse.
Greensill Capital collapsed in 2021 after a primary insurer refused to renew coverage, leaving the firm's British arm with liabilities exceeding Stg1.6 billion and triggering widespread investor losses.
Insolvency Service Chief Executive Duncan Beach stated the ban reflects the "serious nature of Lex Greensill's conduct," which breached British rules requiring directors to exercise reasonable care, though Greensill denies misrepresentation allegations.
By signing a disqualification undertaking, Greensill agreed to the ban, prompting cancellation of a six-week trial scheduled for June 8 and ending the government's bid for a 12-year disqualification.
The ban takes effect on June 23, preventing Greensill from managing companies without court permission; his spokesman noted the four-year investigation concluded with "no finding that Mr Greensill acted dishonestly or in bad faith.
