UK airports suspend flights due to major radar outage
UNITED KINGDOM, JUL 30 – The National Air Traffic Service (NATS) system fault grounded thousands of outbound flights at major UK airports during peak travel, with operations restored within hours, officials said.
- NATS reported a technical issue at Swanwick control center, causing delays at London Heathrow, Gatwick, City, and Edinburgh airports.
- Amid a UK airspace issue affecting flights across the South East, NATS limited flights into the London control area after a technical problem on Wednesday.
- By 4.25pm, NATS engineers had restored the affected system and operations in the London area were returning to normal.
- NATS said it is working with airlines to clear the backlog, while British Airways reported a Heathrow flow rate limit of 32 flights per hour until 7:15 p.m.
- Following an earlier radar failure, London airspace was temporarily closed, and NATS is restoring operations, with ongoing delays, after the system was affected this afternoon.
