Uganda's president signs into law tough anti-gay legislation with death penalty in some cases
- Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has signed into law the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023, which introduces draconian measures against homosexuality, including life imprisonment for "engaging in acts of homosexuality" and the death penalty for "aggravated homosexuality" such as cases involving people infected with HIV or with minors and other categories of vulnerable people.
- Previously condemned by the United States, European Union and international human rights groups, the bill still enjoys broad public support in Uganda, despite clarification that identifying as gay would not be criminalized.
