UC Berkeley is establishing the Nancy Pelosi Institute to address democracy’s challenges
The institute has raised more than $32 million and will fund research, courses and public forums on democracy, civil rights and polarization.
- On Monday, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the Nancy Pelosi Institute for Representative Democracy at UC Berkeley, scheduled to open in January 2027 focused on strengthening American democratic institutions.
- Retiring from Congress after nearly 40 years, Pelosi views the partnership as an investment in the future and a legacy commitment to train the next generation of democratic leaders.
- The initiative has already secured $35 million of its $50 million goal, and Pelosi plans to co-teach a course on Congress with Eric Schickler starting in spring 2027 on evidence-based solutions to democracy's pressing problems.
- Unlike traditional eponymous centers, Pelosi described the endeavor as 'programmatic' rather than a 'brick-and-mortar thing,' featuring annual forums and a public exhibit at the Bancroft Library starting spring 2027.
- Berkeley Chancellor Rich Lyons insists the institute will remain nonpartisan, aiming to include a range of political perspectives potentially including Trump-aligned figures to deliberate on the country's greatest challenges.
